Don’t be fooled — a Black Mayor isn’t your savior
Sacramento is buzzing about Dr Flo announcing her candidacy for Sacramento’s vacant mayor position in the upcoming election. Dr Flo held a press conference where her and supporters called on potential progressive Sacramento voters to begin fundraising and canvassing to ensure Sacramento can elect its first Black woman mayor. Now while this might seem historic, and a “step in the right direction”; it is vitally important for those of us who identify as African or Black to not only recognize how representation inside of the kkkolonial system does not benefit us, but also how these types of campaigns push our people further from revolutionary politics and why we must call out the contradictions.
History alone should indicate that a Black mayor isn’t the solution to our people’s needs. We have watched, over the last decade as the levels of police violence have increased, so ha the rise of Black politicians being used as political tokens to quell uprisings. From Lori Lightfoot in Chicago, to Keisha Lance Bottoms in Atlanta, these Black mayors have continued to utilize the same types of policies, practices and tactics to repress our indignation at the murder of our people as these kkkraxkas.
